Gray Wolf Morning

Howling Session

by Dan Hartman
May 21, 2019

On Friday, Cindy and I made the run up to Three Forks and our cave great horned owl nest.

We were approaching the Northwest end of Phantom Lake when a gray wolf suddenly crossd just ahead of us.

To our surprise, after crossing it stopped and begun to howl.  It did this 3-4 times before circling to the far side of the lake.  There it stopped and began howling again.

Eventually it climbed the steep slope to disappear in the trees.

Another three miles and we came across another gray wolf some 30 yards below the road hanging around a fresh carcass.
